Michael Anderson (contact me @ contactus@timberlinechurch.org)

Description:
The book club will reading and discussing Lee Strobel’s book, The Case for the Real Jesus: A Journalist Investigates Current Attacks on the Identity of Christ.

Christian author Frank Turek says about Strobel’s lattest book, “One of the best things about ‘The Case for the Real Jesus‘ is that Lee addresses the hottest alternative Jesus theories of the day. You’ll read about the so-called Jesus tomb, the charge that the manuscripts can’t be trusted, and the claim that Christianity was copied from pagan resurrection myths (among other topics). This is the one book that will give you the bottom line on all of those alternative theories–a bottom line that once again reveals that the most reasonable conclusion is that Jesus of Nazareth really did rise from the dead for your sins and mine.”

George McKamey (contact me @ contactus@timberlinechurch.org)

Description:
This class is based largely on Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart’s classic book, “How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth.”  The first semester will focus on the “common sense” basics which are foundational to a solid understanding of God’s Word. Subjects such as: “Why are there so many translations?”, “Is one better than another?”, “Are there really things God meant to be applicable to first century Christians that don’t apply to us today?”  This will be an interactive journey that will encourage participants to take a deeper look at God’s wonderful gift.

This book club will read and discuss world renown church historian Jaroslav Pelikan’s book, “Jesus Through the Centuries: His Place in the History of Culture.” Pelikan is considered one of the 20th century’s most important church historians and theologians. Each week we will read and discuss two chapters. While some of the names and ideas may be new, difficult or seem rather strange; by the end of this study, we will not only have learned a great deal about the history of Christianity, but also about many of our Christian brothers and sisters who struggled with a host of very difficult questions that are strikingly similar to those we wrestle with today.

Although the name of God is not in it, the finger of God is, directing many minute events for the bringing about of his people’s deliverance. The particulars are not only surprising and entertaining, but edifying and encouraging to the faith and hope of God’s people.
