As stated in the previous post, there are 4 critical thinking questions which are essential for Christians to employ in their consideration of ideas.  Whether ideas are proposed to us in a discussion, from a book, or from our own minds, we need to have the tools necessary to think carefully and critically about them.  Therefore, I want to continue looking at the last 2 of the 4 critical thinking questions. In the ethics class that I’m teaching this semester at Dayspring Center for Christian Studies we began the class by talking about ethics as a subcategory of philosophy.  And by “philosophy” I’m speaking primarily about clear thinking.  After all, philosophy involves developing certain skills in reasoning.  Well, this morning we looked at four questions, what we are calling “Critical Thinking Questions,” which I’m hoping to ingrain in my students over the next four months.  It’s difficult to overemphasize the usefulness of these questions when it comes to dialoging with others with whom we might disagree, reading books, or even thinking through our own beliefs.  These questions become handy instruments in the tool belt of the Christian as we engage in evangelism or even pre-evangelism.  Here are the four critical thinking questions and an example of how they work. Question: “I have read in the Bible that we will all have a judgment day when we die. When does this take place?  The moment we die or when Jesus returns?  And also, if Jesus died so our sins are forgiven and our slate is wiped clean why do we still have judgment day?”

Answer: Jesus spent no small amount of time discussing a future judgment of God (Mt 10:15; 11:20).  (more…)

Someone recently wrote to me asking the question, “If we believe God created everything, does this mean that God created evil?  If He did create evil then it seems that God is not all good.  If He did not create evil then it seems that our original belief (God created everything) is wrong.  And if He did not create everything then don’t we have two Creators?”

The simple Christian answer to the question is . . .  (more…)

Have you ever heard of the popular series of “PIG” books?  “PIG,” or Politically Incorrect Guides is a series of books which Regnery Publishing is putting out.  One book of particular interest in the PIG series is Jonathan Wells’, The Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design.  Wells’ book has been a top seller since its release in August of 2006 probably due to it clear and non-technical explanation of the issues surrounding the conflict between Darwinism and Intelligent Design.

The most recent edition of the “Christian Research Journal” (Vol. 30, No. 4) features an article by Concordia Univ. philosophy professor, Angus Menuge entitled, “Is Methodological Naturalism Essential to Science?”  So, here’s Menuge’s brief review of Wells’ latest “PIG” book.  I’d be interested to know if any of you have picked up Wells’ book and what you think of it.
