Thinking about the devil September 28, 2006

Besides God, Himself, the devil might be the most misunderstood being in all the world. Think about it. What images comes to mind when you think “Satan”? I’d guess that most of us conjure up images of a goofy or cantankerous looking fellow, often with red tights, horns, and a pitchfork (thanks mostly to Dante’s Inferno). However, this image of the evil one is far from accurate, as depicted in the Bible. So, who is the devil? How did he come to be as he is now? Why are our ideas of him so inaccurate? How should we think about him? (more…)
Understanding the book of Leviticus September 24, 2006

It’s often times said lightheartedly that when you try to read through the Bible in a year, everything goes great until you hit the book of Leviticus. Then everything comes to an abrupt halt. Why is this? Well, for one thing, besides a few select chapters (8-10, 24), it’s not written in narrative or story form, and so is less gripping to a reader. And with all the infinitesimal details pertaining to food, health, sanitation, as well as moral, civil, and ceremonial laws, it’s easy for us to think, “Next!”? Nevertheless, there are some important themes to understand in the book of Leviticus, and some helpful advice for reading it. (more…)
Why the New Age Movement isn’t new. September 20, 2006

It’s a misnomer to think that all New Agers believe and practice exactly the same thing. I remember Robert Stewart, one of my seminary professors, once saying, “Trying to define the New Age Movement is like trying to nail Jell-O to the wall.” You see, the New Age Movement (NAM) is not a centralized organization. There are no creeds or sacred scriptures. You can find literally hundreds of publications by various groups that fall into this somewhat nebulous crowd. (more…)

Why is only Christianity exclusive? September 17, 2006

I’m never shocked anymore to hear the retort from someone who considers him or herself religiously ‘inclusive.’ It usually sounds something like, “Christians are so arrogant because they claim to have the only way!” The argument seems to be claiming that all religions—except Christianity—believe in a sort of “different-strokes-for-different-folks” theology. As Hindu, Sri Ramakrishna once put it, “All religions are true. God can be reached by different religions. Many rivers flow by many ways but they fall into the sea. They are all one.” So, we’re to believe that all religions besides Christianity are accepting, even embracing, of other religious paths. After studying the world’s great religions for some years now, I’ve come to the conclusion that anyone who seriously makes this claim is either grossly uninformed or deliberately dishonest. (more…)

Timberline Church is co-hosting a lecture by Pete Bocchino (author & international lecturer) at the CSU Lory Student Center Theater on Thursday, September 14, @ 7pm.
How Do You Arrive At Truth? Pete will explore the process by which you can come to reasonable and testable conclusions on moral/ethical issues such as human cloning, physician assisted suicide, abortion, gay marriage, and war. How can we know if our moral conclusions are true or not? Is there such a thing as a “true” moral belief, or is everything really relative? You will have a chance to ask Pete your most troubling questions on matters of truth, morality, and ethics. Don’t miss it!
My little boy’s first day of school September 13, 2006

Today my wife Kristen and I took our oldest son, Keaton (3 & ½ years old) to his first day of preschool. And in the blink of an eye we’ve got parent nights, fundraisers, fieldtrips and more. Having three little ones (all under the age of four) we have tended to roll our eyes when people say, as they so often do, “Ohhh, enjoy this time! They’ll be grown up and gone before you know it!” However, by about the 100th time we were told this, Kristen and I thought that this many people can’t be wrong.
So, we’ve been trying to be much more intentional about savoring every stage of they journey with our kids, and not merely looking forward to that next stage (though a stage without diapers will be nice). And standing down on the sidewalk this morning, watching little Keaton walk up the steps of the school on his first day–hair neatly combed, proudly lugging his new X-Men backpack–I realized the importance of this all the more. All day long I’ve been thinking about the words of a country song that was popular a decade or so ago.
